Eagle*Seagull

Recalling the bittersweet grandeur of Hunky Dory-era Bowie filtered through the melancholy art-pop sensibilities of bands like Blonde Redhead, Eagle*Seagull have created a haunting self-titled debut that has the rock-pop ensemble from Nebraska pulling in comparisons to bands du jour such as The Arcade Fire and Interpol - without sounding much like either. Released in October 2005, Eagle*Seagull's debut is a hypnotizing exercise in gloom and elation that more than meets the high expections such prestigious comparisons have invited.
Formed in late 2004 in the midwest college town of Lincoln, NE, Eagle*Seagull were an immediate buzz in the independent Nebraska music scene and began recording their long play record in early 2005 - an obsessive task that continued off and on for the next eight months. The result was an album of unique vision - an almost manic recording that is at times minimal and despondent, while at others frenetic and full of urgent, jittery, even joyful energy. Upon it's release on October 11th, 2005, Eagle*Seagull's self-titled album garnered the kind of attention that suddenly propelled bands such as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! and The Arcade Fire into instant successes. Hailed by many critics as one of the best albums of 2005, it quickly sold out of it's first pressing and even earned the band an unexpected mention in Rolling Stone. Following the success of their debut, Eagle*Seagull then embarked on their first comprehensive U.S. tour in February and March of 2006.
With more tours planned and a steadily growing presence not only in the U.S. but in Europe as well, critics and fans alike have labeled Eagle*Seagull as a 2006 "Band to Watch".

BAND OF THE YEAR

E*S has been named "Band of the Year" by the Lincoln Journal Star. Here's the article:

Band of the Year - Eagle Seagull

E*S’s debut album, released in October, drew comparisons to Interpol and the Arcade Fire, but the band doesn’t really sound like either of those groups. The comparisons probably stemmed from the dynamic diversity of E*S’s music. I’ve previously described the band as “an eclectic pop-rock contradiction,” and that’s the best I can do without forcing this square peg of a band into the round hole of a genre. But in my book, a good album doesn’t make a band worthy of “Band of the Year” status — a good live performance does. That said, E*S’s shows are consistently entrancing. The band’s members always seem perfectly in sync. Every friend I’ve taken to see the band live has said something to the effect of, “Holy crap, these guys are good!” I don’t want to put too much pressure on these guys, but they deserve to be recognized, and I predict they’ll be much more than another underappreciated local group this time next year.

E*S listed as one of The Reader's Top Ten Albums of 2005

Here's the list:
Spoon -- Gimme Fiction (Merge) -- Dark and theatrical, this is Britt Daniel's most thought-out collection of late-night rockers.
Beck -- Guero (Interscope) -- A return to Mellow Gold's def suburban beats and (L.A.) street sensibilities. It's about time.
Bright Eyes -- I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (Saddle Creek) -- Conor Oberst's folk-rock opus will stand as a career high-water mark.
Eagle Seagull -- self titled (Paper Garden) -- Eli Mardock is Lincoln's version of Win Butler singing songs that fly (like an eagle) from cute to majestic.
Sufjan Stevens -- Illinois (Asthmatic Kitty) -- A choir of indie slackers led by a Little Prince in a Cubs ball cap sing lullabies to Jacksonville, Decatur and Chicago. Go White Sox!
Okkervil River -- Black Sheep Boy (Jagjaguwar) -- One of the most thoughtful and emotionally powerful folk-rock bands on the indie circuit today, this could be their best.
Low -- The Great Destroyer (Sub Pop) -- Forget the old, creepy séance music; as they get older and wiser they only rock harder… and better.
Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink -- Solo albums (Saddle Creek) -- I refuse to pick a favorite. Both are better than anything they've done together. Now imagine the possibilities.
Of Montreal -- The Sunlandic Twins (Polyvinyl) -- Weirdly electronic, weirdly retro, or just plain weird, it's impossible to deny their bouncing, infectious beats.
Criteria -- When We Break (Saddle Creek) -- Pure FM back-break indie rock floating on Stephen Pedersen's soaring bird-call melodies and the stutter-step, boot-on-your-neck, five-beat rhythms that have all the subtlety of a drunken waltz on meth.
